Spy cameras galore

A recent Malay Mail survey revealed that one can get spy cameras in a multitude of guises, ranging from pens, caps, sunglasses and even beer cans along Jalan Pasar.
The wireless camera system is not only easy to set up, it's affordable too.

You can get the entire system for RM700.

Put on a cap or a pair of camera sunglasses and you can take shots that can be downloaded into a hard disk or uploaded directly onto the Internet.

During our survey, a shop specialising in closed circuit and security cameras had an array of spy cameras as well as other equipment needed for a complete surveillance system.

The shop's sales assistant showed us a pin-hole camera the size of a matchbox selling for RM320.

"This is one of our more popular pin-hole cameras," he said.

He added that most of the spy cameras were imported from China and Taiwan.

The sales assistant said built-in spy camera pens, another popular item, could be purchased for between RM50 and RM3,500, depending on the quality.

He said one would only need a recorder, a wireless transmitter and some wires to install the entire system.

"It is very simple. Anyone who can install a DVD player can set up a hidden camera system." The cheapest spy cam system available, complete with a computer connection and a video card, would cost RM700.

This includes a WS-007AS pinhole camera with built-in wireless transmitter/receiver for RM150, a DV-3004 computer video card for RM480 and RM75 for the wiring.

For those with a smaller budget, they could opt for a ‘pirated’ video card for only RM70.

"I wouldn’t recommend it though as these items are very unstable," said the salesman, who obviously wanted to sell us the more expensive range.

The man said the cameras can shoot from a distance of "20 to a few hundred metres away".

When we asked him if he had any problems selling us the items if we wanted to use them to spy on girls, the salesman replied: "If you wanted to do something like that, you wouldn’t tell me, right? "If someone tells us they want to monitor their staff in the office when they have something else completely different in mind, we can’t very well stop them now, can we?"
